Jacksonville VPK Orchestra Invited to the State’s Capitol for a Special Performance
The J.H. Walker String Ensemble to travel to Tallahassee to kick off its three-year statewide pilot program with a performance at the state’s Capitol Building and the Museum of Florida History
JACKSONVILLE, FL – (August 13, 2013) The J.H. Walker String Ensemble has been invited to perform as guests of staff members of the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs at the Museum of Florida History in the state’s Capitol on Thursday, August 15, 2013. With this performance in Tallahassee the students will be participating in the statewide kick off of the next phase of Guiding Success – a three-year pilot program. “Our first two years were very successful as a demonstration project and I am excited that our work is being recognized by art advocates across the state,” says Richard Cuff Executive Director of League of Florida Orchestras, Inc.
The J.H. Walker String Ensemble consists of the advanced students in the Guiding Success Initiative, a pre-kindergarten music program, at All About Kids VPK Music Academy. The students who participate in this advanced ensemble are now mostly first graders but they began studying music and learning to play the violin as early as three years old as a part of the two-year Guiding Success demonstration project.
In addition to the performance and tour of the Museum of Florida History, the students will also tour the Florida Capitol Building and perform for the group of college students known as the Dream Defenders who are staging the sit in at the Governor’s office. In preparation for the Tallahassee trip, The J.H. Walker String Ensemble will hold two rehearsals on Wednesday August 14 at All About Kids VPK Music Academy on North Pearl Street from 10:00 am 11:00 am and from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm.
The students will perform the Star Spangled Banner and You’ll Never Walk Alone as well as several other songs that display the talent that they have developed at such an early age. “The children in this ensemble are not only great musicians but they are also our future leaders and this trip to Tallahassee allows us to further our vision for Guiding Success, which includes exposing our students to a broader culture, and it allows us to give them a firsthand look at politics in action,” says Joann Walker, owner of All About Kids, Inc.
The Guiding Success program gained statewide attention and caught the eye of the Florida Cultural Arts community when Cuff and the students were featured on the Culture Builds Florida web site at www.culturebuildsflorida.org. In this next three-year phase the Guiding Success program is being offered free to three and four-year old students who qualify for the United Way’s Success-by-Six voucher.
